It’s important to stay healthy while travelling, especially if you are travelling for long periods of time. Staying healthy can help prevent you from becoming sick and can help ensure you feel great during your trip and don’t feel guilty when you get back home.
Efi, founder of healthy living and travel blog EFI.MK and student of International Relations in Greece shared her tips to staying healthy while travelling.
How to Stay Healthy While Travelling
It’s not always possible to maintain the same workout routine that you are used to at home on the road. That does not mean that there are not many fun ways to stay active and fit while travelling.
Walking and Running
This, in my opinion, the easiest way to exercise anywhere. You only need your trainers and the necessary clothing and can do it almost anywhere. Not only is walking and running a great way to exercise, it’s also a fun way to explore your new destination. Instead of taking public transportation, walk if possible. Instead of taking the elevator, walk up the stairs. You’ll be so busy enjoying your new surroundings that it won’t even feel like exercising!
Sometimes running isn’t an option. For example, maybe the place you are visiting has a lot of dogs or has no space on the road/side road to run. If it’s not easy for you to get outside and exercise safely then you can exercise in your accommodation.
Use Exercise Videos
If you stay in a hotel room, you’ll have the space and privacy to exercise in your room (or visit the gym if the hotel you’re staying at provides one). Open your laptop and find an exercise video on YouTube or do your own thing. There are all types of free exercise videos that you can find online. A quick half an hour in the morning or evening will make a big difference!
If you don’t have the luxury of a private room (hostel), there may still be a common space where you can exercise if you’re not too shy. Who knows, maybe some others travellers will want to join in!
Cook Your Own Food
The game changer for my diet while travelling is buying healthy food from the market. It can be tempting to buy the not-so-healthy snacks and fast food. However, it’s important to take the time to cook healthy meals and choose healthy options. Find which fruits and vegetables are in season where you’re staying and go to local markets. Find out if it’s common practice to haggle where you’re staying.
I always feel my best when I cook my own food. The best place to stay, if you want to be able to cook, is of course somewhere with a kitchen like a hostel or Airbnb. Plus, if the owner is kind enough they might let you use spices or leftovers, that’s what happened to me when I went to Naples.
You probably won’t be able to maintain your normal routine but as long as you are staying active and eating healthy you will be fine. Stress can cause many physical problems from headaches to tiredness and sore muscle. Too much stress can make you sick so try to relax, after all, you are on vacation!
